You probably can correctly guess that if you’re suffering from a sudden or severe toothache that you should call your emergency dentist. Oral issues are best handled by a trained expert with the right experience and equipment to identify and treat problems with your teeth, gums, and jaw.

However, you might feel uncertain about where to go if you’re experiencing swollen or puffy cheeks. Continue reading to learn more about 3 potential causes behind facial distension and how your dentist can help!

Cause #1: Tooth Abscess

Did you know that the average adult has around 50 to 100 billion bacteria from about 200 different species in their mouth? While some of these germs help defend your teeth and gums, others can penetrate your enamel and infect the tender nerves inside. Frequently, a painful fluid-filled sac, or abscess, develops at the base of the affected tooth. The associated swelling is not only uncomfortable, but it also puts your dental and general health at risk.

Not only can the infection erode your connective and bone tissues, but it can also enter your blood stream and travel to other parts of your body. From there, it can contribute to other medical concerns, like heart problems and diabetes. Thankfully, your dentist can provide a root canal to remove the infected materials, alleviate your ache, and restore your tooth’s appearance and functionality.

Cause #2: Salivary Gland Issue

Another common culprit behind an inflamed face is an infection in your salivary glands. These secreters are responsible for providing enough spit to keep your mouth moist. This helps rinse away leftover food particles and unwanted bacteria. Plus, it has a nearly neutral pH level to counteract potential acid damage that harms your enamel.

These glands are located in your mouth, neck, and head. If they become blocked or infected, they become irritated and engorged, which can cause your cheeks to swell. Depending on the severity of your condition, your dentist can prescribe antibiotics and might recommend warm compresses and gentle massage to address it. Otherwise, they’ll refer you to an appropriate physician.

Cause #3: Severe Allergic Reaction

Anaphylaxis refers to a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur when your body’s immune system releases a large amount of histamines in response to an allergen. This can cause facial distension in addition to other symptoms like diarrhea, hives, breathing difficulties, a rapid heart rate, nausea and vomiting, or a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Many people carry epinephrine autoinjectors (EpiPens) for known allergies, but if you suspect this is the issue, it’s essential that you call 911 to get the right help quickly.

If you’re unsure of what’s causing your cheeks to balloon but are not experiencing urgent symptoms, it may be best to contact your dentist first!
