You encourage your child to eat wholesome snacks and play outside in order to keep their body healthy, but how do you help them maintain good oral health? A great oral hygiene routine as well as making smart choices is key! Read on to learn some tips on how to keep up with your kids’ smiles from your children’s dentist.

Brush Twice Daily

You already knew this one, but many children have the tendency to skip out on brushing if they aren’t reminded. Your child should be brushing their teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush for about two minutes each time.

Floss Once Daily

Many people, including adults, brush their teeth but skip out on flossing. However, it is also extremely important. It is best if your child flosses before brushing at nighttime. This way, they can remove leftover food particles that have gotten caught in their teeth. Younger children will require your help. There are also flossing tools available that can help children who struggle with using traditional floss.

Use Fluoride

When choosing a toothpaste for your child, make sure it contains the natural mineral called “fluoride.” Also ask your child’s dentist about fluoride treatment during their appointment. It makes a huge difference when it comes to strengthening tooth enamel and preventing decay.

Choose Healthy Snacks

Eating occasional sugary and starchy snacks doesn’t usually hurt, but stock up on healthy foods all that you can! Some tooth friendly snacks include mixed nuts, cubed cheese, yogurt, sliced apples, and baby carrots. They are good for your child’s teeth and delicious!

Stay Hydrated

Instead of acidic and sugary beverages like sports drinks, soda, and fruit juices, encourage your child to drink water or milk. Save the sweet beverages for special occasions.

Visit the Dentist

By taking your child to the dentist for regular cleaning, you can help to stop dental issues in their tracks as well as discouraging new ones in the future. When problems are caught early on, they will save plenty of time, money, and discomfort for your child.

Replace Their Toothbrush

Toothbrushes are best to be replaced approximately every three months. When you keep a brush for too long, you’re allowing bacteria to grow. Your child certainly shouldn’t be brushing with a dirty toothbrush. Over time, bristles will also begin to fray, which will make them less effective at cleaning their teeth.

No one wants to watch their child suffer from oral health issues and spend extra time getting dental work done. By following these tips, your child will be able to show off their healthy smile for years to come!
